I think it’s probably no secret that I love to read. It’s the one thing I consistently use for pleasure, self-care, distraction from life, a reward, a rest, and to ignore all of the other things I need to be doing. I’d say it’s kind of a problem but…it’s reading.
On the flipside, people have been telling me I should write a book since I was a kid. I have to say, I agree. And I have enough material already written for an entire book, what luck! Here’s the thing: in order to turn all of that into a book, I’d have to read it all for the millionth time, put things in some sort of order, edit all of the individual pieces so that they fit together seamlessly, prepare it into some sort of manuscript format, and submit it to someone. I don’t know how to do most of those things, and so when I sit down with the ambitious, inspired thought of “I’m going to get this manuscript going! Today’s the day!” I invariably end up retreating to the bed in my office (genius!) and – you guessed it – reading a book by someone else.
As I said, I should probably say that it’s kind of a problem. And, it is. But it’s a problem I don’t know how to solve, so, here we are.
I also have a fear of running out of books. My only New Year’s Resolution for 2018 was to not buy any new books, in hopes of breaking my habit of being completely incapable of leaving a bookstore empty-handed, despite how many books I may (read: do) already have at home.
When I made this resolution, I had just over 50 books in my to-read pile, and was confident that I could get by with those, as well as books that come through my Little Free Library, and if I got desperate or needed a specific book for one of my book clubs, there was always the actual library.
I’ve done pretty well, I have to say! *pats self on back* Granted, the year isn’t over yet, and while I have purchased a few books this year, they have all been for gifts. Only two of those gifts were for me.
It’s kind of a problem.
But I think, as problem habits go, I’m going to keep this one for a while.
Side Note: To help with this ‘problem’, and because I also love buying books for other people to enjoy, I created a little book exchange for the holidays! If you’d like to partake, click HERE.
